LIFE4EPR launches the ExPeRt Hub: the European community to innovate Extended Producer Responsibility is born

An open platform for institutions, businesses, collective schemes, researchers and civil society to improve EPR policies and accelerate the transition towards a circular economy.

The LIFE4EPR project officially presents the ExPeRt Hub, a new European platform dedicated to sharing knowledge, experiences and best practices on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The initiative aims to create a permanent space for dialogue among all stakeholders involved in the design, management and development of EPR systems, fostering more effective policies and greater circularity of resources.

The development of the Hub is led by Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), a partner in the LIFE4EPR project and a European point of reference in research on environmental and sustainability policies. Through its Centre for Environment, Economy and Energy (3E), the university will help collect, analyse and promote the best EPR practices at European level, providing scientific expertise and innovative tools to support dialogue among stakeholders.

A meeting place for those building the circular economy

The ExPeRt Hub stems from the awareness that the challenges linked to the management of products at end of life require ongoing dialogue among stakeholders that often operate separately: public institutions, producer responsibility organisations (PROs), businesses, researchers, local authorities, civil society organisations and consumer associations.

The platform will offer an open and collaborative environment where participants can share experiences, discuss challenges and identify innovative solutions. The aim is to move beyond traditional sector-based approaches and encourage the exchange of knowledge across different waste streams and national contexts, both within and beyond Europe.

From research to public policy

One of the distinctive features of the ExPeRt Hub will be its ability to turn stakeholder dialogue into concrete guidance for public decision-makers. In the coming months, the platform will host a series of consultations dedicated to the most relevant issues for improving EPR systems.

The outcomes of this work will feed into the policy recommendations developed within the LIFE4EPR project, helping to strengthen the dialogue between research, operational practice and governance.

One of the most extensive databases on EPR

The Hub will also provide its members with access to one of the most comprehensive online collections of scientific publications, studies and analyses dedicated to Extended Producer Responsibility. This resource is designed to facilitate access to the most up-to-date knowledge and support evidence- and data-based decision-making processes.

Why EPR is essential for the circular transition

Extended Producer Responsibility is considered one of the most effective tools for improving waste management and promoting more sustainable production and consumption models. By assigning producers responsibility for the end-of-life phase of products, EPR encourages the design of goods that are more durable, repairable, reusable and recyclable.

In this context, a community such as the ExPeRt Hub can help strengthen the system by bringing all actors in the value chain into dialogue, from producers to recyclers, from local authorities to EPR system operators. In doing so, it can support the dissemination of solutions that have already been successfully tested and accelerate innovation.

An invitation to participate

LIFE4EPR invites all interested stakeholders to join the ExPeRt Hub: sector professionals, researchers, representatives of institutions, civil society organisations and economic operators. The ambition is to create an international community capable of sharing knowledge, generating new ideas and making a concrete contribution to the evolution of EPR policies and the circular economy.
